Film analysis "The Notebook"

“The Notebook” is a romantic movie directed by Nick Cassavetes. The film is based on the novel of the same name written by Nicholas Sparks. The film is an American movie produced in 2004. The main actors are Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams. The target audience to this film is mainly girls.

The movie starts in a modern day nursing house where an elderly man named Duke begins to read a love story from his notebook to a female patient. The story starts in 1940 at a carnival in Seabrook Island where the poor local country boy Noah Calhoun meets Allie Hamilton, a rich girl who is staying in Seabrook Island with her parents for the summer. They spend a romantic and idyllic summer together. One week before Allie is going home to go studding on college Noah shows Allie a house he hopes to buy. After this they get in a big fight and they decide to break up and Allie leaves without saying goodbye. They both moves on with their lives Allie continue school and get engaged to Lon Hammond while Noah goes to world war two. Noah later comes home and buys the house he showed Allie. He fixes up the house like Allie wanted him to do, and hopes she will come back to him. After a while Allie comes to the house to see Noah. After this she does not know which man she wants to be with. The movie switches the elderly man and woman again, and the woman realizes that the man is telling the story about her life and that the man is Noah. She also remembers that she left Ron to be with Noah.
The main characters in this movie are very different from each other. In the move Noah is presented like a typical poor small town boy with no future while Allie is a rich city girl who is going the college and she is having a bright future.

The story is not told chronology. The story switches between when Allie and Noah were young and when they are old and Noah is telling Allie their story. The climax in the film is when Allie finds out that the story she is being told is the story about her and Noah and that it is Noah who is telling the story.

The film does not have an open ending. The movie ends with that Allie and Noah are on the nursing home and Noah goes into Allies room late at night. When the nurse comes into the room the next morning she finds both Allie and Noah dead in the bed. They have both died peacefully holding each other hands. The last scene shows a flock of birds flying away.

I think that the theme for this film is love. The film shows a clear love story between people that should not be together in the first place. The theme shows a clear message through the film. The theme is connected to the title of the film because you often write about love in your notebook.

My personal opinion about “The Notebook” that it is a great film about love. It is a heartbreaking story. I did not have a dry eye after the movie was finished. Even if the film is telling å typical love story it is a film worth seeing.
